OPPO Find X3 Neo 5G review: flagship-worthy design, what else?

(Post picture: © 2021 TechnikNews)

The Find X2 Neo got us at the beginning of the year in our test very convinced with restrictions on the part of the EIA. The successor, the OPPO Find X3 Neo, brings some improvements at first glance.

In addition to the flagshipProzessor Snapdragon 865 you also get a sensor developed with Sony, namely the IMX766. You can find out in the following lines whether the device can convince for the recommended retail price of 799 euros.

Design - Very refreshing

Personally, I think the black model in our test is extremely beautiful. In mediocre light it is just a rather dark black, but when exposed to light it looks like a sky full of glittering stars. This also gives a blue tinge. As a material, it relies on the so-called OPPO glow process. It's a grainy back that feels very high quality on Gorilla Glass 5.

The frame has been completely flattened at the top and bottom and while it is made of aluminum at the bottom, a straight glass strip is used at the top, which looks extremely high-quality. The smartphone can therefore stand by itself without assistance. The transitions are all very pleasant and the placement of the camera bar looks quite harmonious.

But while last year the Find X2 Neo and Lite models still got something to do with Find X2 Pro could assign, this year it goes with the assignment to the Find X3 Pro not at all. You absolutely cannot see that these are devices from the same series.

The smartphone is really light, thin and pleasing to the touch considering its size. After a few flagships weighing 220 grams over the last few weeks, 184 grams and 8 millimeters are almost surreal for the Find X3 Neo. The front, on the other hand, is rather unspectacular: The rounded edges on the left and right are very pleasant to wipe, we have a small punch hole for the front camera and a large display on the top left. We have been seeing all of this for over a year now. The distinction between current smartphones is much more on the back.

If I had to list one disadvantage: The corners of the smartphone protrude very far, which doesn't look very nice at first glance.

Display - Average

In principle, the Find X3 Neo is still a Reno 5 Pro+, due to the position already no find. That's why you won't find Quad HD+, 120 Hertz, 10 bits or other technologies that you know from flagship screens here. It is simply a normal Full-HD+ 90 Hertz AMOLED panel with sufficient brightness. In principle, there are no differences to the predecessor. Just looking at the display from the front offers that Find x3 lite for half the price no less. On the software and hardware side, the effort is far from that of a real Find. The sampling rate of 180 hertz is only designed for places that have 90 frames pro support second.

At the beginning of 2020 I could have said that it was a good display, but this year it is maximally sufficient, especially with a recommended retail price of 800 euros.

Loudspeaker, vibration motor and unlock

OPPO treats the Find X3 Neo as the first non-flagship device linear vibration motor. Finally the vibration feedback can be used and it no longer massages your hand. However, since there is still only one Z-axis motor installed, one needn't expect too much from the haptic feedback. Current flagships are still one step further. The speakers aren't the best on the market either. Stereo gives you a three-dimensional effect, but at high volume the whole smartphone vibrates and the sound quality is also worse than, for example, with one Samsung Galaxy A52.

Before we talk about inner values, let's talk again about how to get into the software. In terms of speed, the in-display fingerprint sensor is possibly the best optical one on the market, but it is still a bit short in terms of reliability. Often you have to put your finger on it twice and due to the thin construction and the inner design it is positioned at the very bottom. That means that you always have to reach around something to reach it. Otherwise, as usual, there is also fast 2D face recognition.

Software - ColorOS 11

ColorOS 11 over Android 11 is used as the user interface. Compared to ColorOS 7, this is a big improvement. The animations when starting apps in particular have been improved, because opening goes from slow to fast with 90 frames pro Second. The blurred backgrounds and several additional functions also have to be praised. Floating windows have finally been added, which are similar to those in MIUI.

I really like ColorOS 11 and should be able to satisfy all users right from the start. This makes it really good as an easy to understand and constantly running UI. That ProBut there are still problems with the updates. So far, all innovations can only be used on a few devices, more must definitely come here.

Performance

This year's Neo finally says goodbye to a mid-rangeProprocessor and UFS 2.1 storage. However, you don't get this year's flagship SoC, but "only" the Snapdragon 865 from last year. The RAM is still on LPDDR4X standard. Of course, this is absolutely sufficient and fluid enough solely from the everyday performance. App launches are extremely fast and there are no stutters in use. Some things only become clear when playing games: Due to the thin construction, the Find X3 Neo belongs to one of the inferior models with Snapdragon 865 in this area Genshin impact, one of the most demanding games, it only averages 53 frames pro Second. The instability is noticeable. But since it's still an 865, it's perfectly fine for simpler games.

Battery life & charging - 65W SuperVOOC 2.0

The Find X3 Neo uses a capacity of 4.500 mAh for the battery. With a refresh rate of 90 Hertz, I get six to seven hours of display-on-time in everyday life. The battery life is good and lasts for a day. Of course, the charging of the smartphone particularly stands out again, because the Find X3 Neo uses the typical 65 watt SuperVOOC 2.0 technology here, which takes the smartphone from 33 to 0 in just 100 minutes Procharges. In emergency situations, this is a perfect way to quickly fill up a large tank. Definitely a very practical function in everyday life.

Camera - Strong main camera

When it comes to the camera, the manufacturer uses the IMX766 with OIS, which was developed together with Sony. There is no difference to the Find X3 here Pro.

User experience in the camera app

The user experience in the camera app is very pleasant, the focus even beats that S21Ultra. HDR directly in the View Finder can be very pleasant, but I recommend deactivating this scene enhancement as the colors jump back and forth.

Results

Nowadays you can hardly tell a difference between different smartphones during the day, but the Find X3 Neo always does very well here. The colors are sometimes saturated, but always very pleasant to look at. The dynamic range is on a high level and not as aggressive. The differences are mainly found at night. With night mode, the OPPO Find X3 Neo has very nice colors that are realistic and make a nice look. The level of detail is on a very high level and even beats the S21 Ultra. The fact that the IMX766 is also comparatively small is particularly evident in situations with even less light.

The ultra-wide-angle camera is then only mediocre. Much too saturated during the day and in dark situations, the differences in the level of detail become apparent. But it is only wide enough from the field of view, almost at Samsung's 13 mm level. Absolutely sufficient to use for simple pictures, otherwise I recommend using the main camera. The 2x optical zoom camera is only slightly better than a digital crop in the main camera and it is also very difficult to use. After taking a picture through the f / 1.8 aperture, you can often see that the main camera was used for the picture. At higher zoom levels it hardly helps.

video quality

While the main camera can record videos in 4K with up to 60 FPS, unfortunately only 30 FPS are possible with the other cameras. Overall, the video quality is pretty good, the colors are realistic and saturated. Now the night mode for video recordings is finally of some use due to the new sensor, but I still do not recommend filming under these dark conditions.

Overall, only the main camera stands out in the OPPO Find X3 Neo, which is actually a purchase argument at the price.

Conclusion

The Find X3 Neo has actually gotten better in most areas as the actual Reno has a different market position behind it. The predecessor, the Find X2 Neo, with a Snapdragon 765G cost a similar amount to start with. This year's competitiveness has been greatly improved with a flagship SoC, an IMX766 main camera and 65W fast charging. However, the competition also got better. That Xiaomi Mi 11 offers a 1.440p 120 Hertz Samsung E4 AMOLED display and a Snapdragon 888. Then there is also a Samsung Galaxy S21, which is also equipped with a 120Hz display, comes with an IMX555 main camera and is also powered by the powerful Exynos 2100. Both also cost around 800 euros in the recommended retail price.

In principle, the Find X3 Neo is not the model that should compete with the other flagships. It's still a Reno, a smartphone that cannot be faulted in terms of design and charging and which came onto the market at 200 euros too expensive. Even if the camera has gotten better, it still can't keep up as a complete package. I would recommend it for 600-700 euros, especially because of the design and the main camera.
